A small business website has three parts: a domain (your address, such as yourbusiness.co.za), hosting (where the site lives) and the website itself, built with a website builder or with software such as WordPress. In South Africa you can buy all three from one local provider, or mix local and global services.
Browse the options: website hosting in South Africa lists local hosts and what each may suit.
Option 1: a website builder (everything in one subscription)
Builders such as Wix and Squarespace include hosting, templates and an editor in one plan. You connect a domain you’ve bought, or buy one through them.
May suit you if: you want to launch quickly, don’t want to manage hosting or updates, and your site is mainly pages, a contact form and perhaps a small shop.
Check: whether the plan bills in rand or US dollars, the cost after any first-year discount, and how easily you can move your content away later.
Option 2: WordPress on a local host
WordPress is free, open-source software (verified). It powers many sites through themes and plugins. You need a host to run it. South African providers such as HOSTAFRICA and Domains.co.za sell WordPress hosting alongside .co.za domains and email. xneelo offers hosting and servers as you grow.
May suit you if: you want full control, plan to add an online shop with WooCommerce, or need features a builder doesn’t offer.
Check: who handles updates and backups, whether an SSL certificate is included, and renewal prices for hosting and the domain.
Option 3: a simple presence while you start
If you’re testing an idea, a WhatsApp Business profile, a Google Business Profile and social pages can do a lot. Add a website when you need one. The free WhatsApp link generator and QR code generator help customers reach you either way.
A checklist before you pay
- Total yearly cost: plan + domain + email + paid plugins or apps, at renewal prices.
- Business email: an address such as
hello@yourbusiness.co.zalooks more professional than a free webmail address. Check whether it’s included. - Speed on mobile data: many visitors browse on phones and pay for data, so keep pages light. Compress photos before uploading with the free image compressor.
- Backups: know how often your site is backed up and how to restore it.
- POPIA: if your contact form or shop collects personal information, publish a privacy notice and keep that data secure. The Information Regulator publishes guidance.
- Leaving later: make sure you can transfer your domain and export your content.
