Image Compressor

Shrink JPG, PNG and WebP files by quality or to a target file size. Nothing is uploaded.

Images are processed on your device — never uploaded

How it works

  • Quality mode: each image is drawn onto a canvas (applying its orientation) and re-encoded as WebP or JPEG at your chosen quality. Lower quality = smaller file, with more visible artefacts.
  • Target size mode: the tool binary-searches quality between 5% and 95% to find the best quality under your target, and only shrinks dimensions if quality alone can’t get there.
  • Max width scales large photos down first, which often saves more than lowering quality.

Every file shows its original size, compressed size and percentage reduction, with a before/after preview so you can check the quality. If a result is larger than the original (common for already-optimised images), it’s flagged — keep your original instead.

Privacy: your images are opened, compressed and saved by your own browser using the Canvas API. They are never uploaded to ToolTarvern or anyone else, and the tool keeps working if you go offline after the page loads.

Example

A 4.2 MB phone photo (4032×3024) compressed to WebP at 75% with a max width of 1920px typically comes out at a few hundred kilobytes — small enough for a website or email — with little visible difference. Need it under 200 KB for an upload form? Switch to Target file size.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. Images are decoded, compressed and re-encoded by your browser using the Canvas API. They never leave your device.

How does “target file size” work?

The compressor tries different quality levels (a binary search) and keeps the highest quality that fits under your target. If even the lowest quality is too big, it also scales the image down step by step and tells you what it did.

Which format compresses best?

WebP usually gives the smallest files for photos at similar quality, and is supported by all modern browsers. JPEG is the most compatible. PNG is lossless, so “quality” doesn’t apply — use the Image Resizer to make PNGs smaller.

Does compression remove photo metadata?

Yes. Re-encoding drops EXIF metadata such as camera details and GPS location — good for privacy. Orientation is applied first so photos stay the right way up.
