Slug

How it works

  1. Accented letters are converted to plain letters (é → e) using Unicode normalisation, and “&” becomes “and”.
  2. Apostrophes are removed so “owner’s” becomes “owners”, not “owner-s”.
  3. Everything is lowercased; any run of other characters becomes a single hyphen.
  4. Optionally, stop words are removed, and the slug is cut at a word boundary to your maximum length.

Example

“Café Owners’ Guide: 10 Best POS & Payment Tools (2026)” becomes cafe-owners-guide-10-best-pos-and-payment-tools-2026. With stop words removed: cafe-owners-guide-10-best-pos-payment-tools-2026.

Pair your slug with a strong title and description using the search snippet preview.

Frequently asked questions

What is a URL slug?

The slug is the readable part of a URL that identifies a page, such as “best-invoice-software” in example.com/guides/best-invoice-software/. Good slugs are short, lowercase and descriptive.

Should I remove stop words from slugs?

It is optional. Removing words like “the” and “of” makes slugs shorter, but keep them if removing them changes the meaning or makes the slug hard to read.

Should I change the slug of an existing page?

Avoid it where possible. If you must, set up a permanent (301) redirect from the old URL to the new one so visitors and search engines are not sent to a broken page.
