How it works

The tool parses your URL, then sets each utm_* query parameter you filled in (replacing any existing value and keeping your other parameters). Values are percent-encoded, so spaces and symbols are safe. With the lowercase option on, “Spring Sale” becomes spring-sale.

A simple naming convention

Example

URL https://example.com/shop, source newsletter, medium email, campaign Spring Sale becomes:

https://example.com/shop?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=spring-sale

Frequently asked questions

What are UTM parameters?

Tags added to a URL (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign and optionally utm_term, utm_content and utm_id). Analytics tools such as Google Analytics read them to attribute visits to a campaign, channel or link.

Which UTM fields are required?

Source, medium and campaign are the core three and should be filled for every tagged link. Term and content are optional — content is useful to tell apart two links in the same email or post.

Should UTM values be lowercase?

Analytics tools generally treat values as case-sensitive, so “Facebook” and “facebook” can show up as separate sources. Pick a convention, such as lowercase with hyphens, and stick to it — this tool can enforce it.

Should I use UTM links on my own website?

No. Tagging internal links can overwrite the original source of a visit. Use UTMs only on links pointing to your site from elsewhere — emails, social posts, ads and partner sites.
