How it works
Text ideas are built from patterns that work at thumbnail size: a result (“R300 WEEK”), a contrast (“CHEAP VS EXPENSIVE”), a warning (“DON’T DO THIS”), curiosity (“IT WORKED?!”) and numbers. Only options of four words or fewer are shown.
The preview draws your text on a 1280×720 canvas with a thick outline and shadow for contrast, automatically wraps it onto two lines and shrinks it to fit. The readability note warns if text is too long to read on a phone.
Example
For “budget meal prep” with the result “R300”, options include “R300 WEEK”, “BUDGET MEAL PREP?” and “CHEAP VS EXPENSIVE”. Pair the thumbnail “R300 WEEK” with a title like “I Tried Budget Meal Prep (Under R300) for a Week” — the two work together rather than repeating each other.
Frequently asked questions
How many words should thumbnail text have?
Usually two to four. Thumbnails are viewed small, often on phones, so text must be readable at a glance. The thumbnail shouldn’t repeat the title — it should add to it.
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
YouTube recommends 1280 × 720 pixels (16:9). The preview here is exactly that size, and the download is a 1280 × 720 PNG. Check YouTube’s current file-size limit before uploading — compress with the Image Compressor if needed.
Is my background image uploaded?
No. The image is drawn on a canvas in your browser and never leaves your device.
