How it works

  1. Fill in your business details and your client’s. Fields marked * are required.
  2. Add line items. Each amount is quantity × unit price, rounded to the cent.
  3. VAT is calculated on the subtotal: VAT = subtotal × rate ÷ 100, and total = subtotal + VAT. The default rate is 15% (South Africa’s standard rate, checked against SARS on 16 October 2026) and can be changed. Unit prices are treated as VAT-exclusive.
  4. Only registered VAT vendors may charge VAT. Registration is compulsory above R2.3 million of taxable supplies in 12 months (from 1 April 2026). See key South African figures.
  5. Check the live preview, then Download PDF or Print (choose “Save as PDF” in the print dialog if you prefer your browser’s PDF).

The PDF uses a standard font that covers Western European characters. Other scripts (for example emoji or non-Latin alphabets) are replaced with “?” in the PDF — use Print to keep them.

Example

A web designer invoices R8,500 for a 5-page website plus R750 for hosting setup. Subtotal R9,250; VAT at 15% R1,387.50; total due R10,637.50. With “Charge VAT” ticked and a VAT number entered, the document is titled Tax Invoice.

Frequently asked questions

Is this invoice generator really free?

Yes. There is no signup, no watermark and no limit. The PDF is created in your browser, and your details are not sent to ToolTarvern.

When does it say “Tax Invoice”?

When “Charge VAT” is ticked and you have entered your VAT number. In South Africa only registered VAT vendors may charge VAT and issue tax invoices. If you are not registered, untick “Charge VAT” and the document is titled “Invoice”.

What must a South African tax invoice include?

SARS specifies the details a tax invoice must contain, and the requirements depend on the value of the supply (full vs abridged tax invoices). A full tax invoice generally needs the words “Tax Invoice”, your name, address and VAT number, the recipient’s name, address and VAT number, a serial number and date, a description of the goods or services, quantity, value and the VAT charged. Check the current SARS VAT guide for the exact rules.

Where is my data saved?

If “Keep a draft in this browser” is ticked, your invoice is stored in your browser’s local storage on this device only. Use “Save as file” to keep a copy, and “Open saved file” to continue later or on another device.

Do I need invoicing software instead?

For occasional invoices this tool is enough. If you send many invoices, need automatic numbering, payment reminders or bank reconciliation, invoicing or accounting software will save time.
