Image Dimension Checker
Find an image’s exact width, height, aspect ratio, DPI and format, and which social media sizes it fits.
Images are read on your device — never uploaded
How it works
The checker reads the dimensions written inside the file (the image header), without opening or re-saving it. It also applies the photo’s orientation flag to show the size you’ll actually see on screen, works out the aspect ratio, and compares the image with common social media sizes (compiled October 2026).
- Fits: the right shape and at least as many pixels as the platform recommends.
- Will be cropped: enough pixels, but a different shape, so part of it will be cut off.
- Too small: fewer pixels than recommended, so it may look blurry.
Example
An iPhone photo might be stored as 4032×3024 with orientation 6 (“rotate 90°”). The checker shows it as 3024×4032 portrait, 3:4, 12.2 MP, and tells you it fits a 1080×1350 Instagram portrait post after a small crop.
Frequently asked questions
Is my image uploaded?
No. The checker reads the image’s header bytes in your browser. Nothing is sent to ToolTarvern or anyone else.
Why are the stored and displayed sizes different?
Phone photos are often saved sideways with an “orientation” flag that tells apps to rotate them. The stored size is what’s in the file; the displayed size is what you see after rotation. Most websites and apps use the displayed size.
Which formats are supported?
JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, BMP, ICO, SVG, AVIF and HEIC/HEIF. HEIC photos from iPhones can be measured even though most browsers can’t display them.
What does DPI mean for my image?
DPI (dots per inch) only matters when printing. On screens, only the pixel size counts. To print sharply, aim for about 300 pixels per inch of print size: the checker shows how large that is for your image.
