How it works
When someone shares your link, apps read the og:image tag and crop the picture to their own shape, usually from the centre. This tool shows those crops, checks your image against each platform’s recommended size, minimum size and file limit (compiled October 2026), and marks the area that stays visible in all of them.
| Where | Shape | Recommended | Minimum | Max file |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack… | 1.91:1 | 1200×630 | 600×315 | 8 MB |
| X — summary_large_image | 2:1 | 1200×600 | 300×157 | 5 MB |
| X — summary (small square) | 1:1 | 600×600 | 144×144 | 5 MB |
Example
A 1600×900 (16:9) image is cropped slightly at the sides for Facebook (to 1.91:1) and a bit more for X (2:1), and to a centre square for summary cards. “Download a 1200×630 version” crops it around your focus point to the exact size, ready to upload.
Frequently asked questions
What size should an Open Graph image be?
1200×630 pixels (a 1.91:1 ratio) works for Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack and most other apps. X (Twitter) crops large previews to 2:1, so keep important content away from the top and bottom edges.
Why does my link show a small image or none at all?
Common reasons: the image is under about 600 px wide (shown as a small thumbnail), the file is too large, the image URL isn’t absolute (it must start with https://), or the platform cached an old version. Facebook, LinkedIn and X each have a tool to refresh their cached preview.
Is there a file size limit?
Facebook accepts up to 8 MB and X up to 5 MB. WhatsApp is widely reported to skip images over roughly 300 KB, although this isn’t officially documented, so keeping previews small is safest.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The checks, previews and the resized version are all made in your browser.
