The short answer
Both are established cloud accounting products with a South African presence. The deciding factors are usually practical: which one your accountant uses, bank-feed support for your bank, and the total cost of the features you need.

Xero and Sage Accounting are two of the names South African small-business owners hear most often. Rather than declare a winner we haven’t tested, here’s how to make the decision for your business.
Start with your accountant
Ask your accountant or bookkeeper:
- Which system do you prefer to work in, and why?
- Will your fees change depending on which one I choose?
- Can you help me set it up correctly?
If they strongly prefer one, that’s a significant point in its favour.
The South African checklist
Go through each item on both products’ official South African websites or during a trial:
| Check | Why it matters | Xero | Sage |
|---|
| VAT handling and reports for SARS | Saves time at each VAT period | Verify | Verify |
| Bank feeds for your bank | Avoids manual statement imports | Verify | Verify |
| Billing currency (rand or other) | Exchange-rate exposure | Verify | Verify |
| Payroll (built-in or add-on) | Needed once you employ staff | Verify | Verify |
| Invoice payment links with local gateways | Get paid faster | Verify | Verify |
| Accountant/adviser access | Collaboration without sharing passwords | Verify | Verify |
| Data export | Exit plan | Verify | Verify |
We’ve deliberately left the cells as “Verify”. Features and plans differ by plan and change over time — and we only fill in what we’ve confirmed. Use the table as your trial worksheet.
Work out the total cost
Add up the plan you’ll need in a year, plus payroll and any add-ons, and compare that with how many hours of admin it will save. Our guide to reading SaaS pricing pages explains what to look for.
Run the same test on both
During a trial, do one realistic month:
- Create three quotes and convert two to invoices.
- Connect or import a bank statement and reconcile it.
- Record a few expenses with receipts.
- Run the VAT report (if you’re a vendor) and a profit-and-loss statement.
Whichever makes that month feel easier is likely your answer.
Other options
If you mainly need invoices, a lighter tool such as Zoho Invoice may be enough for now. Explore all accounting and invoicing tools, and keep the VAT calculator handy for quick checks.
